Garden of Eden in Drummondville

Until December 16th, my Garden of Eden (Jardin d'Eden) is being exhibited in the Musee Populaire de la Photographie in Drummondville, Quebec, Canada. I will be there on October 27th (Saturday), at 1 pm, to give an artist-talk.

Also, today is the last day when you can see my Weather Report in Red Wall Gallery in Ottawa. From there the Weather Report goes soon to Montreal, to the Galerie Occurrence. Opening on October 26th (Friday) at 6 pm. I will be there.

My exhibition in Preus Museum

I haven't written for a while because I traveled to Norway, to Preus Museum for the opening of my Weather Report exhibition. Preus Museum is a National Museum of Photography for Norway and it is really an amazing venue: they have huge collection of photographic prints, absolutely unique collection of photographic equipment (over 7 thousand cameras) and the photographic library which counts among the most significant photographic libraries in the world. Current shows

My exhibition Weather Report opened yesterday in Red Wall Gallery in Ottawa. It will be there until October 20th. Tomorrow the same show opens in Preus Museum in Horten, Norway. It will last until January 6th next year. The show of Garden of Eden in Lindsay Art Gallery ends today and the double show of Garden of Eden and Weather Report in BWA Gallery in Gorzów Wielkopolski is on until September 26th.

I have received some photos from my double show - of "Garden of Eden" and "Weather Report"  in the Gardzienice Thater Art Gallery in Lublin, Poland, which ends in few days. "Garden of Eden" is presented in the main gallery upstairs and "Weather Report" in second gallery, in a cellar.

Garden of Eden in Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides

My "Garden of Eden" series is exhibited in the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides from June 28th to September 9th 2012.
There is a little article about it in Journal Le Nord.

Garden of Eden and Weather Report in Lublin

My "Garden of Eden" and "Weather Report" series will be exhibited together in the Gardzienice Theater Gallery. The exhibition will last from July 6th to August 2nd 2012 and the exhibition opening will take place tomorrow at 6:30 pm. I regret I cannot be there.

Garden of Eden in Bowmanville

Seven works from my "Garden of Eden" series are currently exhibited in the Bowmanville Town Hall in Bowmanville, Ontario. This exhibition has been organized by Visual Arts Centre of Clarington. It will be there until September 28th.

Weather Report in the Inverness County Centre for the Arts

My "Weather Report" is being exhibited in the  Inverness County Centre for the Arts in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, until July 1st. Another show that travels without me somewhere where I would gladly go myself.

Workshops for schools

I haven't been posting too much recently, because I have been busy with my workshops and I have been away from home most of the time. Since 2000 every spring I have been teaching the Camera Obscura and Pinhole Photography workshops for public school students, under Ontario Arts Council Artist in Education grant. It's a five-day workshop where kids learn a little bit about optics and history of photography, they get inside my walk-in, mobile Camera Obscura, and they take their own pinhole photographs, which I develop in my portable darkroom, which travels to schools with me. It's been fun to do it, but slowly I will have to end this activity, because I am getting too busy with all the new projects, exhibitions, plans for books, etc.

The big green box is my portable darkroom, the cardboard box in the front is a small simple Camera Obscura, the small green boxes in the back are my HoleMagic pinhole cameras, which students use for taking pictures.

NordArt Festival

Four photographs from my Garden of Eden series are now being presented at the NordArt Festival in Germany. It's a huge event, with exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, performances and more. It lasts until the end of September.

Z cyklu Garden of Eden A. Maciejewski / fot. mat. Galerii Solvay

Garden of Eden to tytuł cyklu zrealizowanego przez Andrzeja Maciejewskiego. Na projekt składają się fotografie współczesnej żywności ułożone w zestaw 24 obrazów martwych natur. Kompozycje fotografowane zostały za pomocą sztucznego oświetlenia i starego, analogowego aparatu Sinar.

Tytułowy "Rajski Ogród" to propozycja dla miłośników nie tyle martwych natur w ich klasycznej, barokowej odsłonie, co miłośników samego detalu i smaku, jaki owe obrazy wprowadziły do sztuk wizualnych. W przypadku fotografii Andrzeja Maciejewskiego inspiracja takim malarzami jak Caravaggio, Fantin Latour, Melendez, Grazia czy mistrzowie flamandzcy jest widoczna, choć pod oczywistą warstwą kryje się współczesny pazur. Teatralne operowanie światłem bez wspomagania się sztucznymi efektami ma na celu naśladowanie efektów malarskich z XVII i XVIII wieku.
Andrzej Maciejewski tak mówi o swoim projekcie: "Nasza cywilizacja wykreowała naiwne podejście do przyrody, gloryfikujące jej hojność i łaskawość. Jednocześnie jesteśmy z nią w nieustannej wojnie, usiłując ją ujarzmić i zaprząc w naszą służbę. Owoce i warzywa z supermarketów, ujednolicone, opakowane, ponumerowane, są doskonałym przykładem tego, jaki naprawdę mamy stosunek do natury. Rozwinięte społeczeństwa XXI wieku tworzą dla siebie sztuczny raj, gdzie wszystko, przynajmniej na pierwszy rzut oka, jest ładne i bez skazy. Jednak w trakcie tego procesu powoli tracimy różne wartości, jak smak czy wyjątkowość. Mój projekt zderza się ze sobą te dwa konteksty – idealistyczną wizję stworzoną przez wieki naszej kultury i rzeczywistość, stworzoną przez naszą żarłoczną i wygodnicką cywilizację".
Rajski ogród według Maciejewskiego to supermarket, gdzie nie liczy się, jakość ale ilość i wizerunek sprzedawanych dobrodziejstw natury. Ale czy to, aby na pewno jeszcze natura? Czy już produkt, pojęcie jakże ważne dla współczesnych, rynkowych społeczeństw.
Każdy w przedstawionych obiektów jest wytworem a nie rośliną. Odpowiednio oznakowany, spełniający normy. Jednak po odrzuceniu powierzchowności i reklamowej cukierkowatości kolorów można stwierdzić, że każdy owoc jest sztuczny. Widać to w detalach: przekrojony pomidor z łykowatym wnętrzem, dorodnie pierzasta papierowa sałata, śnieżnobiały woskowy czosnek, długie zafoliowane ogórki czy lśniące perłowa czerwienią truskawki bardziej przyprawiają o mdłości niż zachęcają do spożycia. Ale ta warstwa jest widoczna tylko wtedy, gdy do naszej świadomości dotrze ukryty, choć niezakryty sens ekspozycji. A mianowicie pod modyfikacją genetyczną, która mila, roziwązać problemy jakościowe i logistyczne producentów, kryje się silna pogarda dla przyrody. Ale też dla człowieka, jako elementu w jej ekosystemie. Czy jedzenie sztucznego produktu, zatem może być naszym sukcesem? Czy kalafior bądź ziemniak jest dobry tylko wtedy, gdy będzie posiadał certyfikat, jakości? A może ananas bez instrukcji obsługi nie będzie smakował?
Pytania te pozostają jednak bez odpowiedzi. Wystaw nie udziela jej wprost. Raczej prowokuje do myślenia - czy owoce, które nie gniją w tempie naturalnym są tak naprawdę owocami.
Moja osobistą refleksją była to, że te plastikowe siatki, kody kreskowe i naklejki są przytykiem dla naszego społeczeństwa. A raczej do osób, które kreują modę czy styl – na idealne ciało, którego nie jest w stanie stworzyć natura. Takie przykłady utożsamiają symbol bezmyślnej konsumpcji. Wszechobecnej globalnej unifikacji, która dotyka każdy (łącznie z żywnością) aspekt życia. Już za chwilę wszyscy będziemy wyglądać tak samo, używać tych samych produktów, tych samych słów oraz jeść te same produkty bez względu na naturalne i geograficzne rytmy przyrody.
Tradycyjne martwe natury powstawałyby pokazać ulotność życia, próbować ją zapisać. Ale też w celu ostrzeżenia przed nadmiernym korzystaniem z ulotnych radości życia. Z drugiej strony miały na celu pokazanie bogactwa i zasobności ówczesnych Niderlandów, poprzez wprowadzenie egzotycznych owoców do kompozycji. Te zamorskie rarytasy były dostępne tylko dla wybranych, obecnie każdy może sobie je zakupić na wystawnych stoiskach w marketach.
Wystawa obrazów skadrowanych przez Maciejewskiego stara się przekazać odbiorcy kwintesencję współczesnego człowieka i jego podobieństwo do ludzi baroku. Epoki tak pełnej niepokoju i sprzeczności, gdzie królowała symbolika śmierci. Przedstawione na fotografiach warzywa i owoce staja się negatywnymi bohaterów naszej epoki – lansowanych przez media celebrytów z ich powierzchownym traktowanie życia. Owa marketingowa machina, która stara się wciskać nam nierzeczywiste produkty masowej wyobraźni.
Nawiązanie do martwych natur nie przeszkadzają jednak w odbiorze tych zdjęć w kategoriach estetycznych zbliżonych do kompozycji reklamowych. Być może odpowiadają za to nasze wyobrażenia, gdzie nagromadzenie produktów ma czemuś służyć. A tu służy jedynie sztuce, która choć w jakimś sensie jest zaangażowana to w gruncie rzeczy stara się kontynuować tradycję. Choć tradycja już dawno została zniszczona, gdy dobrodziejstwa natury zastąpiono sztucznym mistyfikatorem żywności. Jak mawiają jesteś tym, co jesz.
